Martha

*Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond* (*Martha, or The Market at Richmond*) is a romantic comic opera in four acts by Friedrich von Flotow, with a German libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Riese based on a story by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. Flotow had composed the first act of a ballet—*Harriette, ou la servante de Greenwich*—with a libretto by Saint-Georges, for the ballerina Adèle Dumilâtre. The other two acts were the work of Friedrich Burgmüller and Édouard Deldevez. It was first performed at the Opéra Le Peletier in Paris on February 21, 1844. The opera *Martha* is an adaptation of this ballet.
