Finished in 1883, Brahms's Third Symphony navigates an extraordinary range of emotions. Although it has been described as "heroic", its sound world is no less introspective. Its superb third movement, whose wistful sadness inspired Frank Sinatra, Serge Gainsbourg and Carlos Santana, is its best known moment. Filled with nostalgia, Mahler's four Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen evoke, in magnificent orchestral shimmer, the emotion that nature provokes in the soul of a traveller, saddened by the loss of his great love.
